EATING IN THANDAUNG GYI

Cuisine
The people of Thandaung Gyi and surrounding villages plant and harvest vegetables, fruits and produce such as tea, turmeric, coffee, black cardamom, dog fruit, mangosteen, betel nut, sugar cane, beans, cucumber, bamboo shoots and much more. So expect your meals to contain locally grown, fresh, seasonal and organically grown produce.

Restaurants & Eateries

All accommodation establishments include breakfast as part of their rates and can also prepare lunch or dinner on request.  You can also sample Karen, Burmese, Nepali and Chinese cuisine at one of the dozen or so small restaurants and eateries scattered in the village. Popular places that are open regularly include Amazing, Ebenezer, Chit Thar, Daw Maw, Rehoboth and BBQ Restaurant.  Others include  See Sar, Lo Won, Yoe Yar, Nway Oo, Ko Wai Lin, Sky Bakery, Happy and Boe Bwar Myit Tar. Please note that most of these places are closed on Sundays.

Thandaung Gyi Women's Group Coffee Shop

Situated on the main road as you enter the core of the town, is this coffee shop operated by the Thandaung Gyi Women's Group. This Group was founded in 2012 by 30 Karen women from the area, to fight violence against women through skills training and economic empowerment in the agri-business supply chain.  Here you can sample and purchase coffee and tea produced by the women.  They also sell wild forest honey, turmeric, black peppercorns, bamboo baskets and woven Karen clothing.
